Does the Microchip Migrate?
Any microchip will migrate if not implanted with care. AVID microchips are coated with an anti-migratory substance but they may migrate if they are not placed deep enough. Here are some steps you can take to reduce the risk:

Microchip Implantation Procedure.
The microchip must be placed in the natural depression occurring over the dorsal process of the 5th and 7th thoracic vertebrae. There it will be cradled until a fibrous response occurs.
  1. Tent the skin minimally.
  2. Place the needle at the base of the tent at a 45 degree angle with the beveled side up, perpendicular to the neck.
  3. Embed the needle completely to the hub in the deep subcutaneous plane to ensure contact with tissue.
  4. Slowly depress the plunger completely.
  5. Release the tented skin and apply pressure on the injection site, keeping thumb depressed on the plunger as the needle is withdrawn to preventing vacuuming the microchip out with the needle.
  6. Emphasize to the pet owner the importance of keeping the pet completely inactive for 24 hours. A kennel works well.

If you discover a migrated or inactive AVID microchip, please report it and, if originally implanted by a vet clinic or shelter, AVID will provide a free replacement chip.
