Microchips  |  Scanners/Readers  |  National ID Program

Our current product offering includes an established line of RFID microchips, scanners/readers, and software.

RFID Microchips: Our RFID Tags purchased from American Veterinary Identification Devices consist of an integrated circuit, which is a microchip utilizing a low frequency of 125 KHz. The microchip is sealed in glass compatible with the animal’s body containing a programmed identification number, which fits inside a hypodermic needle and is injected under the skin of an animal. Since these RFID Tags are passive, meaning they do not require a battery, a reader temporarily energizes the microchip allowing it to transmit its data to the reader with error-free reliability. Under normal conditions, the RFID Tags can last in excess of 20 to 25 years and generally well beyond the life of any companion animal. The read range for low frequency tags is approximately three to seven inches (8 cm to 18 cm).

National ID Program: Our National ID program provides every pet owner the opportunity to register their pet on our national database. A pet does not require a microchip to be registered on our national PETtrac database.  We accept the registration of any microchip number, tattoo number, rabies tag number, city license tag number or our PETtrac collar tag. Our pet recovery service provides a live operator, available 24/7, to ensure your pet’s safe return as fast as possible.

RFID Scanners/Readers: We offer a variety of handheld readers that read both our microchips and our competitors' microchips. We are currently distributing handheld Mini-Tracker scanners capable of reading all makes of FECAVA (FDX-A) and AVID encrypted microchips.  For test marketing purposes over the past four years, we distributed approximately 350 Universal Mini-Trackers capable of reading ISO (FDX-B), FECAVA (FDX-A) and AVID encrypted microchips.  Performance and reliability are very important to AVID.  Consequently, upon completion of some necessary improvements to the Universal Mini-Trackers, we expect to have them available again for distribution in the coming weeks.

PETtrac Recovery System: We offer a proprietary trace back database solution called PETtrac™ which is our advanced software program that stores and tracks identification numbers from implanted animals by recording their microchip ID as well as unique information including data such as:
  1. Pet name, breed, and description.
  2. Animal's brand and tattoo numbers.
  3. Present/past owners and current details.
  4. Medical history of the animal, medication, allergies, etc.
  5. Other pertinent information specific to each sector/industry.

PETtrac™ is approved by the Canadian Veterinarian Medical Association (CVMA) for national use in clinics, veterinarian offices and humane societies, thus tapping a market of over eight million animals in Canada. We provide an electronic and manual data entry service to the PETtrac™ global tracking system for all animals identified with our microchips in Canada. Animal recoveries can be performed by accessing our database through a web browser, as well as through a 24/7 operator assisted service by calling a toll free line.

PETtrac™ Software: Our new software provides direct communication between your computer and our PETtrac database. This software allows you to send PetTrac information directly to us live – eliminating paper registration and the cost of mailing registration forms. You can also recover lost pets registered with us using this software. Here’s how it works:

  • You must have at least Windows 98+; a continuous Internet connection; and Microsoft Internet Explorer. (Please note: Software does not support Netscape or Mac).
  • A High Speed (ADSL) Internet connection works the best. You will experience longer upload and download time if you have a Dial-up internet connection.
  • Notify us that you are interested. A CD with instructions will be sent to you.
  • The software takes approximately 3 to 10 minutes to install (depending upon the speed of your computer).
  • The program will become an icon on your desktop that will allow you access to PETtrac.
  • You can then enter new microchip registrations directly into our PETtrac database. You can print off as many copies as you require.
  • You will also have the ability to add information or update a pet’s file to help keep it current.
  • You will have the ability to check and identify a stray or stolen pet.

For those pets that have a competitor’s microchip (PETNET, AVID USA, other countries) we can provide a traceable collar tag for $10.00 (GST included, HST added in NB, NS and NL) and they can be registered onto PETtrac by our new software for a fee of $26.50(prices include GST, HST will be added in NB, NS, NL).

Please give us a call at our toll free number for more info or to get this service started in your clinic. As mentioned, it is FREE to use with all AVID microchips purchased from your vet co-op, with the option to add in all of your other clients’ pets.
