Microchips  |  Scanners/Readers  |  National ID Program

Since 1994, we have been in the business of reuniting lost pets with their owners. On September 17, 2004, we purchased PetNet’s entire database of pets registered prior to January 1, 2003. Without exception, we have grown to become the largest, most up-to-date pet recovery database in Canada with nearly one million registered pet owners. As Canada’s national recovery database, we are now extending our services to all forms of identification including competitor’s microchips and non-microchipped pets.

When searching our PETtrac database to locate pet information, there are several different identifiers we can utilize to recover a lost pet. These include a microchip number, tattoo, rabies vaccine tag and soon, city license tags. This means our PETtrac database will accept all makes of microchip ID as well as any non-microchip ID to register a pet. Even if a pet has not been identified by any of the above, we can provide a traceable PETtrac collar tag to register a pet in our database. Our simple, user-friendly program has been specifically designed with veterinary clinics in mind.

Our purpose is to provide every pet owner with the opportunity to register their pet on our national database. If a pet owner is opposed to having their pet microchipped but still wishes to register their pet on our national pet recovery database, it is now possible with any of the methods described above.

For animal shelter and clinic staff in some provinces, tracing tattoos is often an exasperating task. The information is not usually available 24/7. If it is over 10 years old, it may have already been discarded. It may be illegible if it has faded. If it is out-of-province, it may be impossible to trace.

By registering your microchip number, tattoo, rabies vaccine tag, city license tag or one of our collar tags, your information will always be available 24/7 with a live operator.

How it works
Any clinic interested in combining their existing tattoo and/or rabies vaccines services with our PETtrac database need simply to contact us. For a small fee, we will provide registration and collar tags that you will incorporate into your tattoo and/or rabies vaccine services much the same way it is included when you microchip your pet. You have a choice of registering a pet by our standard three-part PETtrac forms or by our new on-line software at no extra cost.

Pet owners will have the option to register their pets through their veterinary clinic in one of the following ways:
  • At the same time they have their pet microchipped with an AVID product, tattooed or given a rabies vaccine;
  • Separately, after any non-AVID microchip has been implanted, including a CKC microchip;
  • Separately with, or without, any other type of ID.

In all cases, a PETtrac traceable collar tag is provided. No matter how a pet ends up being registered on PETtrac, it is for the lifetime of that pet-pet owner relationship. There are no annual fees.

If a clinic already uses AVID microchips, there is no extra fee to a pet owner to have their pet’s tattoo, rabies vaccination or city license tag number added to their pet’s PETtrac record at any time. We recommend that you do this for your customer or encourage them to call us to register their information.

It is our goal to encourage municipalities across Canada to adopt the use of microchips as a pet’s lifetime license. Any clinic who would like us to approach their local municipal government office with our program, feel free to contact us.

Ensure the welfare of your pet by registering your information in Canada’s only national database.
